If someone asked you what the role of textbooks should be in the science classroom – what would your response be?

Here is one passionate post posted to the New York Bio teacher listserv:

When I presented at NSTA and NABT and encouraged hands on inquiry labs, the
comment from the audience was frequently, ” I can’t do that and ‘cover’ the

curriculum.” My response was, “cover” also implies hiding and why not “uncover” the
curriculum through student centered, hands-on, inquiry labs and writing in
the content area….all which I found to be more successful for long term
meaningful learning than “covering” a ton of information.  After all, less
is more!
