Rochester Teen Summit 2015 – Advocates for Change

On April 25th, we took the Science STARS to the first annual Rochester Teen Summit at Nazareth College.  This was an event designed to invite collaboration and communication among Rochester area teens about issues important to them including issues related to social justice. Science STARS were invited to be presenters.   Wow!! Can I just say wow?!?!?  Slam poetry, film, skits, dance – wow.  College students collaborating with urban high school teens.  All so awesome!! And the STARS did a great job introducing their film, “You are not alone” from last year – the movie on teen depression.  It was […]

AERA Research Conference – National Collaboration Related to STARS

I presented three research papers at the American Educational Research Association in Chicago IL on STARS. The first session was a research study on Hope and Possibility of using the Next Generation Science Standards (NRC, 2012) to realize equity and social justice for students who have been traditionally marginalized in schools like many of our African American, financially poor Science STARS.

The second paper/presentation was exploring what it means to learn to teach in after school (informal) environments. My study focused on the need for pedagogical relationships to nurture scientific rigor and youth autonomy.

Finally, the third paper/presentation looked at what […]

Fast Forward Film Festival – Our Awards
The next weekend – April 17th and 18th – STARS received a Young Filmmakers Scholarship Award that granted them V.I.P. Status to attend the Fast Forward Film Festival, a festival run by an independent organization committed to community engagement in environmental action.  One of our films, Changes (a music video), was chosen as one of the top 12 finalists from 96 submissions (adults and youth, expert and novice moviemakers).  Thus it was screened both nights – the first at the Little Theater and the second at a gala at the George Eastman House.  At the gala, awards were announced. […]

Red Carpet Premier at the Cinema – Our Screening

On April 11th, Science STARS had its Red Carpet Premier at the Cinema Theater. We put all the kids’ names up in lights not he marquee, we screened our 4 movies for this year, the STARS shared personal “Ideas worth sharing” that they learned from their work in STARS, and we engaged attendees in a really thoughtful discussion after the film. Our attendance wasn’t quite as strong as past years, but we more than made up for that with our program. The youth saw an audience full of both familiar and unfamiliar faces as they owned their work in […]

Science STARS Shine Bright!

In January, we had an AWESOME news piece done on Science STARS in the Genessee Valley Parent – I go back and read this article any day I need encouragement. I am so grateful for this reporter’s dedication to telling the STARS story. Its a 4+ page story that really captures many of the things we are trying to do.
