So here is the notes summary of seminar and EDU434 from last night. For seminar:
September 13th at midnight (Saturday night, for the seminar Monday night) the first weekly investigation is due. Grab a kid and have him/her give you a tour of the building, making sure to note the important places to them. If possible, do this with both a male and female student and note differences. Also try with a student with disabilities, or with a student you clicked with or a student that doesn’t see eye to eye with you. Bring your camera! There is a picture portion of this assignment.
Letter of expectations due September 19th, a good idea would be to get those signed off on tomorrow at the CT appreciation day since both our supervisors and CTs will be there, which would require less headache trying to schedule time later in the semester.
Safety audits are due September 29th. It is preferable to take our CT on this audit of the lab environment in the school we are in, since we won’t know where we are going. Most schools might have a person appointed to the job of chemical safety, and it might be possible to schedule an appointment with this person for the tour. Another idea is to do the safety audit with your CT or another teacher and then again with the chemical safety manager to see how well the teacher’s tour matches with the safety manager’s.
October 20th field notebooks are due to be handed into our supervisors for checking. Remeber to keep a running written record of cumulative field experience hours, not just individual days. Use the field notebooks to collect quotes from students and teachers for things such as inquiry and nature of science, as well as feedback both students and teachers give you. Since the blog is a public space, if there is anything you feel you want to record, but not so the whole world can see, write it in the notebook so you can discuss it later in seminar or with your supervisor privately.
If there are any questions/issues, remember to first email your supervisor. Always CC Michael and April into all email so if they do need to get involved, they are aware of the situation and can more quickly respond since they have been clued in since the beginning of the incident.
For the three lessons we need to teach, if you are in block scheduling, April wants at least two consecutive days, but three is preferred. If your CT isn’t comfortable giving you an entire week’s worth of instruction, then compromise by splitting each block into a 40 minute (for you) and a 45 minute (for the teacher) section. The material for the three lessons should be what your CT is teaching at that particular time. If possible, try to do your three lessons at least twice, with feedback from your CT (and students too!) so you can modify and improve the lesson for the second time.
Okay, I think that’s everything, and as always remind me if I’m missing something. I thought it would be helpful for everyone to compile a list of everything due each week for both the seminar and EDU434. Well, here goes:
Weekly Investigations (2-3 page document due posted to blackboard the Saturday before class at midnight)*
1 page critical synthesis (posted to blackboard the Saturday before class at midnight)
Post a weekly reflection on your blog (experiences that enhanced your professional growth, due the Saturday before class at midnight)
Once Science STARS starts, there will be a reflective blog post due two days after each meeting (so due Thursday) based on your experiences
*As long as this is posted by 8am on Sunday morning it should be fine.
I believe that’s it. I think a blog post for seminar was mentioned, but for the life of me I cannot remember the details (bad scribe!). The only mention of this I could find in the syllabus was the option of posting your reflection of the weekly investigations on our blogs. If this isn’t right, someone please correct me. Also, April said that if there is a required blog post for seminar, her post for EDU434 can be integrated into the seminar’s post.
